Picture this: a potential customer types your company name, clicks your site… and waits. 3 seconds. 5 seconds. The blank page keeps spinning. They close the tab and go to your competitor. You just lost a sale without even knowing it.
This happens every day. And the reason is simple: a slow site — in a world where most people browse on mobile, often on limited connections — is a shop with its front door jammed shut.
Mobile first, data is precious
- The majority of web traffic now comes from phones, frequently on unstable 3G/4G.
- Data plans cost money: a site that loads 8 MB of unoptimized images wastes the visitor's money — and they notice.
- Google penalizes slow sites in its rankings. Slow site = lower ranking = fewer visitors.
According to Google, 53% of mobile visitors leave a page that takes more than 3 seconds to load. Out of 100 potential customers, you lose more than half before they see anything at all.
How to measure your site speed (for free)
You don't need to be technical. Two free tools are enough:
- PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev): enter your URL and you get a score out of 100 for mobile and desktop, plus the issues to fix. Aim above 85 on mobile.
- The real-phone test: open your site on your own phone, on mobile data (not Wi-Fi). Count the seconds. Beyond 3, there's a problem.
The most common causes of slowness
- Oversized images — the number one cause. A 5 MB photo that could weigh 150 KB.
- Bloated WordPress themes stuffed with plugins and useless code.
- Cheap hosting or a server far from your visitors.
- No caching and no compression.
The fix: build for performance from day one
Speed isn't bolted on afterwards — it's built in from the design stage. That's exactly my approach: sites coded in React / Next.js, images compressed to modern formats (WebP), lazy loading, and optimized hosting. The result: sites that load in under 2 seconds, even on an average connection, and score above 90 on Lighthouse.
